U-21 Crystal Palace-LeedsUnited 0-0
Our Under-21s contested an entertaining yet goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Tuesday afternoon – an end-to-end game which saw both sides denied by the woodwork.
The hosts, who had experienced first-teamer Jason Puncheon in their starting line-up on his return from injury, clipped the woodwork just 14 minutes into the Professional Development League 2 clash as Luke Dreher looked to guide Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross goalwards.
Dreher then saw his header cleared off the line as Palace enjoyed the better of the early openings, before the United youngsters started to apply some pressure of their own – with midfield pair Ronaldo Vieira and Casper Sloth both seeing efforts blocked in front of goal
The game burst into life at the start of the second half and Palace were again thwarted by the post – this time striker Freddie Ladapo crashing an effort against the woodwork after cutting through the United defence within two minutes of the restart.
At the opposite end, Luke Parkin threatened twice in quick succession. First, stinging the palms of Palace goalkeeper Kleton Perntreou with a ferocious strike after bursting into the area, before lashing wide from 20 yards out moments later.
Leeds grew in confidence as the game progressed and Vieira was involved in most attacking moves and starting to cause a nuisance for Palace, with the young midfielder twice testing Perntreou with low efforts.
It was becoming increasingly one-way traffic from the visitors, who were chasing back-to-back league victories for the first time since the opening month of the season.
But Lee Erwin found himself crowded out in front of goal after twisting his way into the area, before Kalvin Phillips dragged well wide from distance.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell still needed to be alert in the Leeds goal to make a smart block to keep out Ladapo’s flick from close-range, but it was the visitors who will feel they could well have left with all three points after Vieira’s effort seven minutes from time cannoned back off the post as the spoils were shared.
Under-21s team vs Crystal Palace: Peacock-Farrell, Coyle, Purver, P McKay (Skelton 73), Denton, Phillips, Sloth, Vieira, Mulhern, Erwin (J McKay 90), Parkin (Lyman 86). Subs not used: Grimes, Oduor.
